Arguments For The Recycling Programme As Well As The Advantages of Recycling.

In 1993,the government launched a recycling campaign with the intention of encouraging the public to recycle their waste.Unfortunately, most people do not take heed of the advice and use the recycling bins to throw their rubbish indiscriminately. They throw all kinds of rubbish which are mostly non-recyclable.Now,the Ministry of Housing and Local Government is launching another nationwide recycling campaign. Many people questioning this act. They doubt whether the campaign will be able to achieve its objective or will it be just another campaign.

Accordin to Dr. Tan Poo Chang, coordinator of the Petaling Jaya Community Centre, the current recycling programme is still based on the traditional approach of placing bins in public areas.Without proper awareness among the public of the need to separate their waste according to their categories, the recycling programme will not be successful. However,Local Government Department Director General,Datuk Lokman Hakim Mohd Jasan, viewed the wrong usage of the bins as a teething problem initially. He said hat with the governments present effort of educating the public through advertisement in newspapers, televisions and radio, the attitude of the people will gradually change. He added by saying that the campaign does not rely entirely on the bins, but more on collection centres. The bins are there to remind people to recycle but they are much more encouraged to take their recyclable trash drop-off or buy-back centres.

Besides that, some quarters believe that a recycling scheme will only work if someone wants what is collected. If there are lack of response and support from recycling industries, the scheme will be a failure. But now,a lot of industries are facing shortages of materials such as plastics, paper and glass waste, therefore, they have to rely on imports. With this existing demands,it is most certain that the recycling scheme will not eassily fail.so,recycling does make a big constribution to the environment.
